How to increase your metabolism

Your metabolism is the mechanism in your body that determines how many calories (or fat) will be converted into energy. As you grow older your metabolism tends to slow down due to both the aging factor and due to poor eating or diet.

Typical signs of a slow metabolism is rapid or easy weight gain combined with a lack of energy.  A child normally has a very fast metabolism which is highly evident in the huge amount of energy that they constantly display.

In order to counteract weight gain it is important to keep your metabolism as high as possible. Often we tend to revert to starvation dieting in an attempt to counteract this weight gain but this can negatively affect your metabolic rate so that when you stop the diet you gain even more weight than you did before.

Increasing your metabolism.

In order to increase your metabolism you may need to break some old habits that are causing you to gain weight and which slow down your metabolism.

1) Drink Water. Water is essential to life and to healthy living. Water not only distributes vital nourishment around your body, but also cleanses the inside of your body and removes harmful toxins. These toxins cause your metabolism to slow down. Toxins can be linked to many serious diseases.

In order to calculate how much water you should be drinking per day take your weight in pounds (1kg = 2.2pounds) and divide it by 2. This is the amount of ounces (1 ounce = 30ml) of water you should drink per day. Ideally you should divide the total amount of water by 10 and drink that amount each hour of the day until about 2 hours before bedtime.

2) Avoid carbonated drinks. The popular carbonated soft drinks are not only high in sugar content but are also chemical laden which increases toxins in the body. Increased weight loss is experienced by many as they simply replace these soft drinks with water.

Diet drinks tend to laden the burden on your liver so try to avoid these as well.

When you are trying to lose weight you are in reality getting your metabolism to burn fat instead of giving it a fresh supply of calories. Sugar is high calories in a form that is easily converted to energy so your body will first use the sugar that you feed it.

3) Eat more often. Plan your meals into 6 portions per day that are eaten at regular intervals. By increasing your meals per day your metabolic rate increases and fat storage decreases as your body no longer needs to store fat in reserve.

4) Eat more healthy. Fast foods are famous for their ability to help you gain weight fast. It is a known fact that wherever the popular American fast food outlets establish themselves in the world, obesity starts to take over.

Fresh home cooked meals consisting of little meats and plenty of vegetables are best. Refer to the above diet plans.

Using the diet plan above for a minimum of 30 days will not only help you to lose weight fast but will also break many of the poor eating habits that you have gained over the years, which are responsible for your rapid weight gain.

5) Get some Help. While the above tips will help to increase your metabolism, you must realize that there are other factors, such as hormonal changes, that have also had a negative impact on your metabolic rate.
